Parking in Butchertown

The Butchertown neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky earned its name from the butchers and stockyards which populated the German neighborhood in the 19th century.  After the Ohio River flood of 1937, the neighborhood faced many challenges in overcoming the damage the disaster inflicted.  Eventually, the neighborhood was rezoned as industrial.

In the 1990s, Butchertown experienced a revitalization converting empty businesses into condominiums.  Waterfront Park, a 55-acre park completed in 1999, is one of Butchertown's prized possessions.  The $58 million park replaced a number of industrial sites in Louisville, including scrap yards and sand pits.  The park features a beautiful esplanade, an amphitheater, docking for boaters, and a number of restaurants.  With the completion of renovations to the former Big Four Railroad bridge, Butchertown will be home to the longest pedestrian bridge in the world.  With so many attractions at the Waterfront Park, parking in Butchertown could be increasingly difficult.
