Downtown Louisville, the business hub of the Bluegrass State, has experienced major growth in the last decade not only in the commercial sphere, but in the residential as well. In the 1990s and 2000s, old warehouses began being converted into upscale loft apartments transforming downtown Louisville into a city with more to offer than simply business districts that closed at the end of the work day. According to the Louisville city government, housing units are expected to have doubled between 2005 and 2010. With so many new residents entering Derby City, parking in downtown Louisville could become a challenge in the coming years.
One of Louisville's prized possessions in the near future will be the $490 million Louisville Museum Plaza. This 62-story, three-tower skyscraper will transform the city skyline. Within it will be a mix of commercial and residential uses, as well as an art gallery and museum. Also in the works for downtown Louisville is the construction of a medical research building on the corner of Hancock and Liberty Streets and a hotel complex on Preston and Liberty Streets.
