Portland Parking on the Louisville Parking Pages

The aptly named Portland is a neighborhood in Louisville that was laid out by General William Lytle in 1811.  Its position on the Ohio River, in connection with the development of the steamboat made Portland a major shipping port in the 19th century.  Ships used the port to unload their freight before reloading it onto ships upstream on the Ohio River.  The role of this neighborhood as a transportation hub led to a proliferation of taverns, wharehouses, and shipyards.

The neighborhood was struck by natural disasters in the 20th century, and flooding in 1945 subsequently led to the razing of a large portion of land in Portland along the river.  Since then, Portland has battled to remain an economically stable area of Louisville, but the neighborhood has a number of plans underway to restore the vitality of the area.  A museum and arts district is expected to replace some of the city's worn warehouses.  The effort should shed greater light on Louisville's culture and the city's eccentric character.  Parks along the Ohio River are also planned in what may turn out to be a smaller-scale version of Waterfront Park.  With developments underway in this portside neighborhood, parking in Portland could become difficult in the coming years.
